About us

Homeopaths without borders is a non-profit organization of male and female doctors, non-medical practitioners and midwives. Our aim is to promote the use of classical homeopathy in regions affected by war and/or humanitarian crisis. Our volunteer work is independent of political, religious and economic interests.

The enquiry for a project always comes from the affected country and is coordinated with the local authorities. We see ourselves as temporary guests and endeavour from the beginning to set up structures that are self-supporting in the long run. In that respect, our work consists mainly of "help for self-help".

How everything began

In 1996, the homeopathy forum started a pilot project in Mostar. The idea was to help the traumatized people of Bosnia-Herzegovina treat their shocks and injuries of war with the assistance of classical homeopathy. In order to organize our efforts efficiently, we contacted the various international sections of Homeopaths without borders and, in September 1997, Homeopaths without borders e.V., section Germany, was founded.

During the following four years, more than a thousand patients were treated free of any charge at the teaching clinic. Almost at the same time, the first educational unit started, where local laymen and laywomen as well as male and female doctors were taught classical homeopathy.

The Mostar project was very successful and was honoured with a prize by the Robert Bosch foundation. The story of the project has been documented in a book by the publisher Peter Irl, which describes the various stages of the project in detail, the travels back and forth, clinical cases, etc...

Local practical help: a survey

The small original group of just a few homeopaths has since grown to a large association of more than 190 members. The international contacts to other sections of Homeopaths without borders were consequently expanded.

The projects of the past years have been very different in terms of intensity and duration.

The largest project is presently taking place in Kenya. Within a span of two years, midwives have been educated in classical homeopathy on the isle of Lamu. The project has been so successful that an intermediate course has just begun and further basic education is being planned.

In Sarajevo, basic education as well as the training and supervision of teachers were offered over a period of several years.

In the project in Macedonia, basic education was provided.

Both projects needed subsequent follow-through to ensure stable on-site structures.

The Tsunami aid project in Sri Lanka brought us an unbelievable wave of new members, donations and of course a lot of work at the sites. The on-site practice was occupied almost continuously by various teams of two homeopaths for one and a half year. More than 5000 people were treated. Unfortunately, the project – as had already been the case with the project for assisting the earthquake victims in Bam, Iran – had to be stopped in October 2006, due to the extremely critical political situation.

Further training projects took place in Honduras and Togo. New projects are being planned.

It is our pleasure to pass on our experience: we offer seminars and lectures on our work in crisis areas and in the treatment of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). If you are a school or any other organization with an interest in our work, please do contact us.
